Bloemker's Last-Second Goal Gives Dragons Victory Over Towson in Season Finale

Baltimore, Md. – Drexel Field Hockey won its final game of the 2006 season, 3-2, over Towson in Colonial Athletic Association game. Senior Heather Bloemker (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks East) scored with just two seconds left in the game to end the Dragons' season with a victory. Drexel improved its record to 8-11 and 2-6 in the CAA while Towson dropped to 9-10 and 2-6 in the CAA.
Drexel stunned the Tigers as the Dragons started the game with a pair of quick goals. Catherine Chiara (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) took a pass from Emily Horvat (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) and beat Towson goal minder Christina Armer to give Drexel an early lead. The goal was Chiara's ninth of the 2006, the most in a season for a Dragon since Kristina Backenstose scored 12 in 2002. Less than a minute later, freshman Jennifer Bolger (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) took a pass from Chiara and scored her second goal in as many games. Towson responded a little more than two minutes later with a Kim McEwen goal that brought the Tigers to within a goal. The Drexel defense was able to thwart the Tigers from evening the game in the first half as the teams headed to halftime with the Dragons leading, 2-1.
Towson mounted intense offensive pressure in the second half as the Tigers fired 10 shots and finally tied the game with less than 10 minutes remaining when Danielle Wacker scored her first collegiate goal to knot the game at two. The game appeared to be headed into overtime when Drexel earned a penalty corner. With just two seconds remaining Carolina Gibernau (Montevideo, Uruguay/Universidad de la Republica) fired a shot toward the cage that Bloemker was able to deflect past Armer to send Drexel home with a victory.
Drexel's Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) made 14 saves in goal while Armer totaled six. For the game, Towson out shot Drexel, 19-12, and earned 10 penalty corners to the Dragons' four.
